Just another view of the coaling and fire cleaning area.

The coaling stage was located on the left hand side embankment.

This pit lowered the required elevation of the steelwork for the coaling stage.

The pit also provided the ground crews a means of shoveling down the ashes to waiting wagons.

The obvious disadvantage was the need to pump this pit out after heavy rainfalls.

But as can be seen here, the groundwater level is not a limiting factor.
